NEW SINGLE: Kiwat Kennell 'The Moment' + Single Launch Show
Kiwat Kennell releases reflective new single 'The Moment' shining a light on men's mental health.
Kiwat Kennell, a proud Eastern Torres Strait Islander musician from the islands of Ugar (Stephens) and Erub (Darnley), is shining a light on mental health in his new single ‘The Moment’ out Wednesday 25 September. Hot off the back of his performances at Bigsound 2024, ‘The Moment’ is the first look at a series of new works Love & Hate a depiction of what life is like in this colony as a Black Man who was raised to respect law enforcement, whilst simultaneously witnessing the systemic injustices First Nations people are faced with. These conflicting experiences deeply inform his music, which reflects his struggles with racism, identity, and mental health.
Out via Bad Apples and co-written with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe), 'The Moment' is a song inspired by witnessing a friend balancing their mental health struggles and captures the intensity and significance of those crucial moments in life, where a single decision can shape everything. The raw and honest lyrics sit amongst the polished production and aim to break the stigma surrounding Men’s Mental Health and start a healthy relationship with mental WEALTH.
‘The Moment' is a song that speaks to the balance of fear-inducing anxiety that the future can bring, and the overwhelming depression of living in the past. Sometimes our thoughts speak so loud, we cannot see the other side of the coin we are currently spinning on.’ - Kiwat Kennell
Kiwat’s music reflects his lived experience, a testament to his resilience and cultural pride "The Moment' is my first single from a series of new works from my latest project, ‘Love & Hate’, a depiction of what life is like in this colony as a Black Man who was raised to respect law enforcement, whilst simultaneously witnessing the systemic injustices indigenous people are faced with. This track is the beginning of something truly special." - Kiwat Kennell
Kiwat has collaborated with acclaimed artists like Dan Sultan and Mo'Ju, alongside Joel Quartermain, who gave him the mentorship and strength he needed to stand on his own after going solo from Music Victoria's award-winning band, Key Hoo. Emerging as a powerful solo artist, weaving his personal pain into raw, unfiltered storytelling, he has performed on stages at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Bluesfest, and St Kilda Festival.
With its deeply personal inspiration and polished production, 'The Moment' is set to resonate, especially with men who have faced similar challenges with their mental health journey.
