NEW SINGLE: Kim Yang 楊予菁 'Bottom Line' + Turn On The Lights Preorders

Kim Yang 楊予菁 marks the beginning of a bold new chapter with the new single 'Bottom Line' from debut album Turn On The Lights, Launch show + album pre-orders

Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter Kim Yang is set to release her deeply personal debut album, Turn On The Lights (開燈), on Thursday 7 May, marking a powerful arrival from an artist unafraid to explore identity, vulnerability, and self-acceptance with vinyl and CD pre-orders now available via Kim's Bandcamp.

Ahead of the album, Kim is releasing the final single, 'Bottom Line', written in the wake of a friendship breakup; the kind of rupture that can hit with the same force as a romantic heartbreak. Co‑written with Katie Wighton (All Our Exes Live in Texas), the song moves through guilt, misunderstanding, anger, and the fierce clarity that comes from finally drawing a line, "I brought my sadness and anger into the session with a half‑formed song already in mind, recalls Kim. Katie helped tease out the emotional nuances and sharpen the lyrical expression, resulting in a track that holds nothing back and lets the words sit raw and unfiltered. The song features stacked vocal harmonies that give it a gutsy, dramatic edge, which I used to draw out the deep emotions I felt when writing the song."

Blending indie-folk, cinematic soul, and bilingual storytelling, Turn On The Lights traces Kim’s journey from self-doubt to self-discovery and ultimately to self-acceptance. Written across multiple continents and shaped through international collaborations, the album features songs in both English and Mandarin and co-writes with acclaimed artists including Katie Wighton (All Our Exes Live in Texas), Cara Hammond, and Tennyson King.

“I wanted my debut album to capture an insight into my essence… Through my musical journey, I have gone on a journey of self-discovery… Now I am at a moment of self-acceptance, confident to share my full story and help others on their own journeys.”  – Kim Yang

Created between Australia and China from 2023 to 2025, the album was brought to life with producer Louis Montgomery and a collective of collaborators, who contributed strings, vocals, and instrumentation across time zones. The result is a rich, textured body of work that feels both intimate and expansive.

The album's title Turn On The Lights, reflects Kim's identity as an immigrant, a late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman, and someone who has faced mental health challenges, stepping out of uncertainty with honesty and courage. 'All Good When I’m With You' is the album's opener and a joyful, healing anthem celebrating music's power to connect. 'All Of You' is the first of the album's bilingual songs and an indie-folk/Asian pop reflection on uncertainty and identity. 'Bottom Line' is an emotionally charged song about friendship, heartbreak, and boundaries. 'New Start' embraces change, balancing fear and resilience. 'Rain' is a nostalgic tribute to Kim's early musical community. 'What Can I Do' is a tender, cello-driven piece honouring loss and grief for her cat. 'Sanctuary' promotes finding peace amidst life's noise. The experimental 'Battle' is a rhythm-driven track inspired by inner conflict. 'Different And I Like It', sung in Mandarin, celebrates the immigrant experience and individuality. The album closes with 'Forever This Way', a soulful, gospel-inspired love song about enduring partnership.
