Jordie Lane releases raw, live-to-tape album Habitual + homecoming national tour and focus single 'Good For You'
Jordie Lane is coming home!
Lane returns to Australia this November to celebrate the release of his new album Habitual with a national tour including appearances at Town Folk Fest in Castlemaine and Queenscliff Music Festival.
One of Australia’s finest folk-roots songwriters, Jordie Lane, is coming home. Based in Nashville, Lane returns to Australia this November and December to celebrate the release of his new album Habitual with a national tour including appearances at Town Folk Fest in Castlemaine and Queenscliff Music Festival, alongside headline shows in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Following his #1 ARIA Country debut and acclaimed US release Tropical Depression, which reached the Top 40 on the Americana chart, Habitual marks a bold new chapter for Lane, stripping away perfectionism in favour of raw performance, spontaneity and the human imperfections that make music feel alive.
ABC Country Radio Australia has called his music a “masterclass in songwriting,” while Americana UK described it as “sophisticated and immediate.”
Following the roots-rock energy of singles 'New Sun', 'Backseat Driver' and 'Mood Swing'. The album’s focus track, 'Good For You ’, brings the pace and volume down with a classic country-folk sound, laced with pedal steel and an infectious Bass line.'Good For You' is a raw reflection on regret, self-sabotage and the struggle to change. Written by Lane and Clare Reynolds, the song follows a narrator confronting his own mistakes while questioning whether he can ever be good for the person who’s found a way into his heart and soul.
For the recording of Habitual, Lane enlisted acclaimed Nashville producer LOLLIES, known for her work with Caroline Spence, Rachel Baiman and Laura Cortese and their visions were brought to life by Jason Burger (Big Thief, Andrew Bird) on drums, Asa Brosius (Joe Henry) on pedal steel, Trevor Bahnson (Elizabeth Cook) on guitars, and Elias Broxham (Dallas Ugly) on bass. Recorded and mixed in Nashville by Drew Carroll at the legendary The Bomb Shelter (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff and Margo Price). Habitual was mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Tim Smiley, whose credits include Mavis Staples and Waxahatchee.
With the whole album recorded in just over three days and committed entirely to 2-inch, 16-track analogue tape, Habitual captures Lane at his most immediate, a blend of country, rock and blues, complete with tape hiss, grit and the unpredictable magic of a band playing together in a room, and at the heart of the album is a deceptively simple idea: habits, the good, the bad and everything in between.
The result is an album that sounds deliberately alive: direct, physical and full of the tiny imperfections that would normally be edited away. “I’ve always loved getting lost in perfectionism, hours, days, months, years working on something. But with Habitual, LOLLIES was determined to shake me outta that. Recording and mixing direct to tape, with a live band, and embracing minimalism, mistakes and the raw qualities that make it human... Lollies said, ‘OK, you get three goes at each song, then we’re moving on.’ No computer screens, no redoing vocals later. It was scary as hell, but it very quickly gave us a huge sense of relief.” - Jordie Lane.
Habitual centres around the theme of habits, good and bad, that lead the characters and stories in the songs on adventurous wild journeys to the most mundane of situations. Ultimately, it's a record about choices made, for better or worse, and the process of surrendering to a lack of control. A personal journey but also a commentary on the world we find ourselves currently in. Habitual reflects on our increasingly digital, automated world and a growing desire to reconnect with things that are imperfectly, unmistakably human.
The approach became more than a recording technique. It became a creative statement, an analogue antidote to the oversaturation of digital and autonomous technology, and an attempt to reconnect with the physical, imperfect and human nature of making music.
The Habitual tour will also take Lane into regional communities across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, with shows spanning the Mornington Peninsula, Archies Creek, Eldorado, the Northern Rivers and the Sunshine Coast.
For more than a decade, Jordie Lane has built a reputation as one of Australia's most compelling live folk-roots performers, taking his music to major festivals and stages across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Along the way, he has shared stages and toured with an extraordinary list of international artists including Gotye, Billy Bragg, Cat Power, Old Crow Medicine Show, Ruthie Foster, The Moody Blues and The Waifs.
With Habitual, Lane brings that experience to a record that feels less polished by design and more alive by necessity
