NEW SINGLE: Xani 'Michelle' + National Tour + AFMA Nomination

Xani dances her way into your heart with new retro hip hop laden track ‘Michelle’
+ Invites you to dance with her on tour
+ Folk Alliance Awards Nomination

"A haunting, fragile violin introduces the piece before it quickly drops into a freaky, funky electronic, hip hop beat that sizzles and Xani's quirky-flavoured vocals that brighten the song's melody."
- Scenestr

“a sugary blend of disco and pop” - Lauren, Sounds of Oz

“Xani Kolac has been crafting imaginative and experimental alternative-pop music under her Xani moniker, forever flirting between genres thanks to her shapeshifting violin playing yet never quite settling into a specific pigeon-hole” - James Lynch, Trouble Juice

Dancing queen and violin virtuoso Xani returns with “Michelle” - a retro hip hop laden track dripping with punchy vocals. This track is the second chapter of the upcoming concept album An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music, due for release in early 2023, which sees Xani create her own fictitious universe of dance, featuring chapters throughout time of fictional and imagined EDM genres. Fresh off the back of her Australian Folk Music Award nomination, alongside Justin Bernasconi, Rhys Crimmin, and more, Xani is packing up her violin and pedals and will be dancing her way from Brisbane to Adelaide, Sydney to Hobart and everywhere in between this November and December performing tracks from the forthcoming album and songs from the past.

Set to be released Wednesday 5 October via CD Baby and Bandcamp, ‘Michelle’ was originally improvised on a Twitch live stream before being shaped into its current formation with the help of Producer and mixer Jan Skubiszewski (The Cat Empire, A.B Original, Dan Sultan). Together Xani and Jan drew from hip hop roots and added DJ loops, creating three minutes of dirty electric violin sounds, washy claps and an outrageously funky bass line. It tells the story of a scam man on Tinder and Michelle’s questionable choices. “Michelle lives in Paris. She just met a guy on Tinder. He’s from Liverpool. He sends her songs that he writes for her: “Michelle, ma belle, these are words that go together well…”. Anyway, I think he’s a creep. But they’re meeting up beneath the Arc de Triomph,” describes Xani.

The first chapter ‘Dreaming of You’ was inspired by the world of disco and the chapters to come pay homage to Kraftwerk and German techno, Acid House, Trance and more. An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music is the place Xani escaped to over the solitary months of lockdowns, when dancing with, or performing to humans wasn’t an option. A world within her own reach where dance lived on and metamorphosised into something bigger than the present. At the heart of it all, An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music is an acutely personal interpretation of electronic dance music’s evolution through the ages. A party album where chapter by chapter the (inaccurate) history of dance music is tracked by a veritable musical alchemist and total EDM fangirl.

Every show will be a little bit different given that every town in this country is a little bit different, “I am reacquainting myself with old friends, and introducing myself to new ones. I’ll be playing songs from my forthcoming album, and songs from the past. It has taken me years to get all my ducks in a row to come and see you. Now’s the time to get back in the pond and frolic about.”

Tell your friends, spread the word far and wide. Go along for the entire adventure if you like?
No show is the same as the next…
