NEW SINGLE: Parvyn 'New Game' + Upcoming Album Maujuda
Parvyn releases classical Indian raga inspired single 'New Game'
+ Maujuda album pre-orders
+ OzAsia Festival album launch
Delivering a lush neo soul bop, Punjabi-Australian artist Parvyn releases her single ‘New Game’ out Thursday 3 October, the next taste lifted from her upcoming album Maujuda. Meaning ‘to be present, current, or existing’, the album is an exploration of Parvyn’s personal family history of migration from India to Australia via Malaysia and the UK, touching on themes of love relationships, and belonging. To celebrate the release Parvyn and her band will be launching the album at the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide on Friday 8 November.
Drawing together styles of alternative jazz, Indian pop, and elements of classical Indian raga, ‘New Game’ puts a positive spin on a tale of heartbreak, inspired by the cyclical patterns in relationships. The track mimics this story as it moves seamlessly into a 7-beat rhythmic cycle and back again, the hints of disco and soul interspersed with vocal interludes in Sargam (classical Indian raga scatting), and instrumental solos from Mary Ancheta on keys, and Chris Davis on trumpet.
‘Life is a game, where you can make your own rules, but you can also change them when and if you want’ - Parvyn

Out Friday 1 November, Maujuda was recorded in Vancouver at Afterlife Studios and Capsule Studios, with Erik P.H.Nielsen (City and Colour) on engineer duties, produced by Jane Aurora and Mary Ancheta (Mary Jane HIFI), and mastered by Elisa Pasaeng. Centred around finding one’s path in life, the 7 tracks explore different stories and perspectives in discovery and acceptance, opening with the first single and self love anthem ‘Free To Be Myself’. Touching on the complexities of migrating to a new place, ‘Lay Awake’ is told through the story of her grandmother ‘bebeji’, with commentary on ‘how migrants sometimes hold on to their culture so tightly that it can cause a rift between generations, not realising that back in their homeland it has progressed and modernised’ describes Parvyn. The material includes moments of introspection in the new single ‘New Game’, and ‘Divine’, woven between instrumental improvisation from Parvyn’s husband Josh Bennett on electric guitar, and lyrics in Urdu/Punjabi in ‘Huna Lai Jio’ as the track touches on the importance of community and finding your people, and ending the musical voyage at album closer ‘Back to the Ocean’.
‘As an artist, I want to do whatever I can to make this world a better place and contribute positively to humanity. I hope this record brings solace and connection to as many people as possible.’ - Parvyn
Best known for her work in Bollywood inspired psychedelic rock band The Bombay Royale, Parvyn has been touring globally since childhood with her father Dya Singh. Immersed in a reflective world of different cultures and perspectives, her solo project presents her blend of genre-drifting flow state pop and classical Indian raga melodies. She first debuted with live performances at Womadelaide, Mona Foma, Woodford Folk Festival, Darwin Festival, OzAsia Festival, and more. Her debut album ‘Sa’ was nominated for ‘Best World Music Album of the Year’ at the 2022 ARIA Awards, alongside the Australian Music Prize and AusIndies ‘Best Independent Soul/RnB Album’, capturing audiences across Australia with her ethereal inimitable vocals.
