New Video: Christopher Coleman & The Great Escape - ‘Amelia’
Christopher Coleman & The Great Escape share wandering ballad ‘Amelia’
Last year, inimitable Hobart musician Christopher Coleman and his band The Great Escape shared their long-awaited second single ‘Paloona’, two years on from the eight piece’s formative offering ‘Jesse’. Now the band is thrilled to announce the arrival of their third transcendental single ‘Amelia’ and reveal that the New Year will also see the live incarnation of the outfit perform later this month at Tasmania’s coveted Mona Foma in Launceston and nipaluna (Hobart). Coleman will lead the live incarnation of his supergroup to perform tracks from The Great Escape’s upcoming debut album, and Coleman’s third long play, The Great Tasmanian Escape. The cherished homegrown storyteller has also opened up vinyl pre-orders for the album which will be with us Friday 25 February.
‘Amelia’ preludes recently lifted single ‘Paloona’ within The Great Tasmanian Escape, serving as a humble and devastatingly beautiful confessional. Out today along with a poignant video accompaniment courtesy of Lucid Cinema, the track opens with a glorious arrangement of horns courtesy of Glenn Richards, performed by Ken Gardener and Louisa Hogue (trumpets), Adam Hutterer and Frances White (trombones), and Matthew Habben and Georgie Smith (saxophones and clarinet). The vivid orchestral opulence soon makes way for a spacious atmosphere of subdued strings and guitar, allowing Coleman’s brooding oaky tones to tell the timeless story of a love just out of reach.
“Chris gave me a copy of the unreleased record when I approached him to do a music video in 2018 and I was immediately drawn to Amelia. We crafted a somewhat abstract visual narrative that supported and built on the themes of the song centred around a love story set in the 80’s in the Tasmanian wilderness, following a forestry worker and a waitress who have recently met but the nature of their work separating them and exploring the anxieties that arise in a new relationship.” – Gabriel Morrison (Lucid Cinema)
