Music News: Record Store Day announce 2022 date and Taylor Swift ambassador
Crate diggers rejoice, Record Store Day reveals 2022 date + Taylor Swift announced as Global Record Store Day Ambassador
It’s that time of year again folks! Drop the needle and fire up that crackle because Record Store Day is back for its 15th spin around the sun, and it’s shaping up to be one heck of a trip. Taking place in April every year since 2008, Record Store Day is a time where our global music community bands together to celebrate local and international artists, labels, releases and of course the independent record stores that champion them all. This year, the largest single-day music event in the world returns on Saturday 23 April 2022 for another delectable 24 hours of limited edition releases, in-store performances, artist signings and more at your local liquorice pancake dealer.
In a world first, Record Store Day is proud to welcome international best-seller and music industry icon Taylor Swift, as the inaugural Global Record Store Day Ambassador. Swift received three spots on the Top Ten Best-Selling Albums of 2021 list, has had multiple releases on the Record Store Day and RSD Black Friday lists in the past, and has been a staunch supporter of record stores throughout her entire career. In 2020, when the pandemic forced stores to close their doors and rethink physical sales, Taylor took her support a step further, directing fans to record stores around the US where they could find autographed CDs, bringing much needed traffic and attention to these small businesses at a time of great uncertainty for the sector. So for the 15th annual celebration of record stores, Record Store Day has proudly appointed queen Tay-Tay herself as the first Global Record Store Day Ambassador.
Australian artists and bands wanting to have their music included as an official Record Store Day release can apply on the form via the Record Store Day Australia website. As for the indie store-owners, be sure to sign up online to participate in the 2022 celebrations and have your RSD events listed on the Record Store Day Australia website. Participating stores must have a physical shopfront located in Australia with at least 70% of ownership residing in the state of operation, and recorded music must be a significant part of the business. Pop up stores and fairs unfortunately do not qualify—this is a day to foster our independent store owners and staff who work day in, day out to bring the best music from around the world to our fingertips.
