NEW SINGLE: Tanaya Harper Young Leo' + Debut Album 'They Have Become Me'
Tanaya Harper shares single ‘Young Leo’ from her upcoming debut album They Have Become Me
+ Perth Album Launch Show
Calling for a Jack Dawson and Rose style romance, Tanaya Harper is back with a new single as she gears up for the release of her debut album They Have Become Me, out Friday 18 October. With her tongue in cheek humour ever present in her songwriting, the new track is a reminder to never settle for less than you deserve, and keep searching for the kind of abounding love Titanic’s Jack Dawson shared for Rose (yes she is aware they are fictional), aptly titling the single ‘Young Leo’. Out Thursday 19 September, this next taste of her debut LP follows on from earlier singles ‘Night Terrors’, and ‘Cleo’, which have set the tone for her new era of music that explores all the sonic possibilities of her unique style of alt-folk-pop and shoegaze honey.
If you never thought you would hear someone calling for a young Leonardo DiCaprio in the same track about elevating your standards in love, Tanaya is here to show you that it’s all possible. A late night Titanic watch session and a surge of inspiration later, Tanaya had created a vow to never again lower her expectations and complete reruns of the same lacklustre relationships. ‘Mutual adoration, it’s not too much to ask for, it’s the bare minimum. If you don’t have that, then really, what is the point of being in a relationship, and more importantly…why are you in it?’, divulges Tanaya.

A long time in the making, Tanaya’s forthcoming debut LP They Have Become Me delivers an insight into all shades of the human experience, the lowest and highest moments and everything in between. The first single and opening track ‘Night Terrors’ sets the tone for the whole album, as Tanaya describes ‘life as a film, in a sense, where songs depict scenes of intense emotion and character development, and scenes of stillness and reflection where it can seem like nothing is happening when everything is happening in the way of growth’. Collaborating with composer and orchestral arrange Jared Yapp, the 12 track work explores the full breadth of her musical exploration, creating silky worlds of strings for tracks like ‘Night Terrors’, ‘Bonded Pair’, ‘Role Models’ and ‘Night Terrors 2.0’; an instrumental arrangement delving into the prospect of a song having a longer and alternate life than you initially thought. Messages of empowerment, reclaiming your space in the world, and following your gut, are scattered amongst stripped back unbridled honesty, lush harmonies, an organ ballad that hurts in all the best ways, and settles for her story of accepting everything that comes your way for album closer ‘Celeste’.
‘Celeste is a song I’ve gone back to in times of difficulty and self-doubt. It’s a hug that lets me know everything is okay, as long as I am being true to myself. That is how I’d like to close the chapter on all the other songs on this album. It’s putting all of them to rest.’ - Tanaya Harper
Tanaya’s musical honesty and vulnerability have seen her play to audiences across Australia, as both a solo artist and in her group projects, sharing the stage with the likes of Jen Cloher, Body Type, Steve Kilbey, Jack Ladder, The Preachers, Alex the Astronaut, and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. As a mainstay in WA’s music scene, she has received multiple WAMi nominations (West Australian Music Industry Awards) for Best Vocalist, Best Folk Act, Best Alternative Act, Best EP and Best Bassist, and support from national and internal radio including UK’s BBC Radio.
With something for everyone, from falling apart to finding yourself, don’t miss whatever message Tanaya Harper has waiting for you in They Have Become Me.
