Melbourne’s soul artist Tanya George reveals her most vulnerable single yet, ‘Piece of Mess’, the next single from her debut album Contrast , returns home from Europe for Australian festival appearances

Melbourne soul artist Tanya George returns with her most vulnerable single yet, ‘Piece of Mess’, out Thursday 6 November via Xelon. Tanya has carved a name for herself as one of Australia’s most innovative vocalists; from the bustling streets of Bourke Street, where she honed her looping craft, to major stages like St Kilda Festival, Womadelaide, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Queenscliff Music Festival, swiftly becoming a powerhouse of authenticity and artistry. After a busy few months performing across Europe with appearances in Rome, Sofar Sounds Berlin, Noord Festival Noorderpark, DNA Art Club, Valentin Stüberl and more, Tanya is returning home for performances at Airlie Beach Music Festival and Folk, Rhythm and Life Festival.

‘Piece of Mess’ follows an emotional journey, inviting listeners to embrace their own imperfections and find strength in vulnerability. Diving deep into the chaos of love, the song was written on guitar in Tanya’s Elwood apartment, from the same creative burst that produced her earlier single ‘Serious’. The track is an honest reflection on the visceral frustrations and insecurities of a turbulent relationship.

“This song is about the emotional spiral of being stuck in a messy relationship, sick of the chaos, yet still fighting for love,” Tanya shares. “I wanted the song to have a lot of tension and release, mirroring the push and pull of relationships. Anyone who’s ever felt emotionally overwhelmed by love will relate.” - Tanya George

Currently travelling across Europe following performances at Government House and Roma Busking Festival in Italy, Tanya is no stranger to her home festival circuit in Australia, having performed at major events including St Kilda Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Womadelaide, and Queenscliff Music Festival, and has collaborated with brands Frank Muller, Melbourne Grand Prix, Quintessentially & Moet Hennessy, Ralph Lauren, Australian Open Tennis, NBL Basketball, Melbourne Fashion Week and many more. A finalist on The Voice Australia (Team Rita Ora, Top 5, 2021) and winner of Buskers by the Lake (2022) and the 2020 Alex Legg Award, Tanya’s looping earned her 4th place at the 2023 Gwangju Busking World Cup in South Korea. Her recent European tour saw her perform across Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, including appearances at Roma Busking Festival, Sofar Sounds Berlin, and Alles is Noord Festival, further cementing her reputation as an international force to watch.
