Indie virtuoso Emily Lubitz is releasing her new single, ‘Big Time,' on Thursday 24 April and announces her forthcoming debut LP Two Black Horses, slated for release on Friday 18 July. Known for her work with award-winning indie-folk pioneers Tinpan Orange, Emily Lubitz first stepped out on her own with debut EP Begin Again, bringing to life a new country tinged body of work. Emily Lubitz will be celebrating the new album up and down the east coast and Darwin, with a festival appearance at Mullum Roots Festival, and joining blues musician Ash Grunwald on tour.
Always with a tongue in cheek approach to success and fame, first seen in a previous release ‘What She’s Got’, Emily Lubitz brings to life a character amongst ‘Big Time’; a story about a small town girl with a voice that brings cowboys to their knees. The fame and fortune promised to her have been elusive, and now she mostly sings in the local bars. But she’s world class and everyone knows it. Walking into the bar to see her striking talent on stage, a voice that moves a room of people to deep feeling, begs the question, what’s the big time anyway?
‘Sometimes I write a song about a character, and she's definitely someone else, but in so many ways, she's me. Or maybe she’s someone who I aspire to be. Either way, I care for her a lot.’ - Emily Lubitz. Painting the visual story, the single is released alongside a scrapbook style lyrics video, with hints of old Western movies, created by Hannah Croft.
Emily’s new record, Two Black Horses, sounds like an old Hollywood film, starring Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline and Pheobe Bridgers, who go on holidays together and talk about their feelings. She wrote the album for her family. It covers themes of forbidden love, immigration, death, loss and growing older with love and defiance. Produced by Emily’s husband and long-time collaborator, Harry James Angus, Two Black Horses is a deeply personal collection of songs that speaks to heartache, heritage and hope.
Having performed on some of the world’s biggest stages and premiere international festivals, including Winnipeg Folk Festival (CAN), Calgary Folk Music Festival (CAN), Haldern Pop (GER), Laneway Festival (AUS), WOMAD (AUS), Woodford Music Festival (AUS) and many more, Emily Lubitz is no stranger to the stage. Through Tinpan Orange, the gates opened wide to radio attention and a fast growing fan base, and Emily went on to appear on SBS’s Rockwiz, dueting with Paul Dempsey and singing the viral YouTube sensation, Dumb Ways to Die. She has collaborated with the likes of Paul Kelly, Martha Wainwright, Jen Cloher, Emma Donovan and Mama Kin, and yet her solo work is imbued with the raw energy of a breakthrough artist.
